Who Would Have Imagined a Blog in 1972?

Welcome to On the Mountainside, our new blog at Burgess Cellars. We look forward to bringing you stories and news from 1000 feet up on the side of Howell Mountain.

Burgess Cellars has been family owned and creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972. When our founder Tom Burgess purchased a circa 1870s vineyard and winery in the early 70s, he likely never imagined anything like a blog! On the Mountainside, like many exciting things happening here, shows the future has arrived at Burgess Cellars and in Napa Valley. In fact, we are having quite the renaissance at our mountainside winery!

Forty-five years after our founding, the second generation is building on Tom’s legacy. Brothers Steven Burgess and James Burgess took over as President and Vineyard Manager. In 2013, winemaker Kelly Woods, a UC Davis graduate, completed the new team, and together the trio has fined-tuned the vineyards and cellar to highlight our mountain grapes.

Under the direction of Kelly, fermentation and aging strategies are customized for each vineyard block, based on tannin profiles and flavors. She is also improving the barrel program and performing trials with new barrels that are more in tune with Burgess Cellars mountain fruit. After much anticipation, our Tasting Room is showcasing our 2013s, which is the first vintage under Kelly’s direction.

We have also revamped our Hospitality Experience, with a redesigned mountainside Tasting Room and enriched presentation.

On the Mountainside will continuously bring you stories and news from the whole team, from the vineyard to the Tasting Room. Enjoy, and we look forward to seeing you at Burgess Cellars.
