Journey From Our Roots

The first vines planted on our property date back 150 years, as Napa Valley's volcanic soils were first drawing attention. With a Swiss Italian family being the first to put wines from these soils on the map in the 1880s, a gravity flow winery was soon built that stood for over a century — only recently perishing in the 2020 Glass Fire. Here, winemaking greats like Warren Winiarski and Mike Grgich launched their careers. Then in 1972, Ohio native Tom Burgess established himself as a pioneer of mountainside wineries and Burgess Cellars was born. Today, as the newest stewards of this outstanding terroir, we strive to rejuvenate the Burgess Cellars name and honor the roots of this land.
